Canada Broadband and Some US Stuff

Rogers asks for temporary speed matching exemption on new gigabit services

Rogers Communications has requested a temporary exemption from Canada's speed-matching regulations for its new gigabit internet services. This move would allow Rogers to offer faster speeds without immediately having to provide equivalent access to competitors, a requirement that typically ensures fair competition in the market. The request has sparked discussions about regulatory policies and the future of broadband services in Canada.

My Take: Here are the new service tiers listed in their filing. This does not include the symmetrical 1G and 2G tier of services mentioned in the exemption.

50MbpsD/50MbpsU;100MbpsD/50MbpsU;100MbpsD/100MbpsU;

250MbpsD/50MbpsU;250MbpsD/200MbpsU;250MbpsD/250MbpsU;

500MbpsD/50MbpsU;500MbpsD/200MbpsU;500MbpsD/500MbpsU;

750MbpsD/50MbpsU;750MbpsD/200MbpsU;750MbpsD/750MbpsU;

1000MbpsD/50MbpsU;1000MbpsD/200MbpsU;

1500MbpsD/50MbpsU;1500MbpsD/200MbpsU;

Why do they need so many tiers?

US state governments can learn from challenges met by European rural broadband projects

Analysys Mason examines the challenges and opportunities in expanding broadband access to rural areas. The article discusses the importance of government support (BEAD), strategic partnerships, and innovative technologies in overcoming the financial and logistical hurdles that often impede rural broadband projects. It also highlights successful case studies and the critical role these projects play in bridging the digital divide.

My Take: Lots of lessons for BEAD, including from north of the border.

From the article - “Perhaps the most pressing concern in the market is the possibility of operators not bidding for BEAD funding, due to the factors discussed above, the general uncertainty on timing and the overall perceived lack of flexibility in managing BEAD-funded projects

Or a smaller one bowing out to larger players. Or the program just not setting out to accomplish what it’s supposed to. Where have I seen that before? I think a lot of vendors hanging their hats on BEAD are in for a rude awakening.

Learn About - Cannibal CME (Coronal Mass Ejections)

In the vast, fiery expanse of our Sun, a dramatic and somewhat eerie phenomenon known as a "cannibal coronal mass ejection" (CME) occasionally unfolds. Imagine a cosmic ballet where one dancer overtakes another, merging into a more formidable force. This is the essence of a cannibal CME, a rare and powerful event that can have significant impacts on Earth.

A coronal mass ejection is a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space. These ejections can carry billions of tons of plasma and travel at speeds ranging from a leisurely 250 Km per second to a blistering 3,000 Km per second.

When these CMEs are directed towards Earth, they can cause geomagnetic storms, dazzling auroras, and disruptions to satellite communications and power grids.

A cannibal CME occurs when a second, faster CME catches up to and engulfs a slower one that was ejected earlier. This results in a single, massive wave of plasma that can be particularly potent when it reaches Earth. The term "cannibal" is apt, as the faster CME effectively "devours" the slower one, combining their energies into a more formidable force.

The Sun’s surface is a chaotic environment, with magnetic fields constantly twisting and snapping like overstretched rubber bands. These magnetic reconnections can launch CMEs into space. When two such ejections are closely timed, the second can overtake the first, creating a cannibal CME. This can be visualized as a cosmic game of leapfrog, where the second player leaps over the first, merging their energies in the process.

When a cannibal CME hits Earth, it compresses the planet’s magnetic field, causing a geomagnetic storm. These storms are classified on a scale from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme), with cannibal CMEs often causing G3 (strong) storms. Such storms can disrupt satellite operations, GPS systems, and even power grids. They also enhance the auroras, making them visible much farther from the poles than usual, painting the night sky with vibrant colors.

Cannibal CMEs are relatively rare, but they become more likely during the solar maximum, the peak of the Sun’s 11-year cycle of activity. Recent years have seen several notable cannibal CMEs, including significant events in 2021 and 2022. These events serve as reminders of the Sun’s volatile nature and the potential for severe space weather impacts on our technologically dependent society.

The most recent cannibal coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred on July 29, 2024. This event was marked by the Sun launching multiple CMEs in quick succession, with the first two CMEs merging to form a cannibal CME. This powerful solar storm hit Earth at 8:27 p.m. EDT on July 29 (00:27 UTC on July 30), sparking a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. Despite initial forecasts predicting a more potent G3-class storm, the magnetic fields inside the CME were oriented in a way that limited their interaction with Earth's magnetic field, resulting in a less intense geomagnetic impact

Cannibal CMEs are a fascinating and somewhat ominous reminder of the dynamic and sometimes destructive nature of our closest star. By understanding these phenomena, scientists can better predict their impacts and help mitigate the risks to our modern infrastructure. As we approach the next solar maximum, the dance of the Sun’s magnetic fields will continue to captivate and challenge us, highlighting the intricate and powerful forces at play in our solar system.
